A plot to end the life of Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, the former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been uncovered following claims that some prison inmates attempted to poison him while in custody.

The startling allegation was disclosed by a senior aide to the politician, Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, who stated that the politician personally alerted him to the life-threatening incident during a court appearance on Tuesday.

The revelation comes as the NPP powerhouse, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, marked his 100th day behind bars.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM, Dr Boakye-Danquah confirmed that correctional authorities have stepped in to investigate the matter, though no official medical reports have been issued yet.

“Chairman is okay. We haven’t received any medical reports from the doctors. But I have received indications that over the past week, some prison inmates attempted to poison him,” Dr Boakye-Danquah stated.

He added that prison authorities are treating the security breach with seriousness to establish the facts surrounding the claim.

“And so I’ve been informed that there are some investigations that are ongoing to make sure that they verify the truth or otherwise of that,” he said.

Dr Boakye-Danquah noted that he personally engaged the head of the prison facility, who gave assurances that a full-scale inquiry was already underway to unravel the circumstances surrounding the plot.

“He mentioned that to me today when he came to court, and I have spoken to the commander, and the commander said he has asked them to investigate the matter, so he will come back to me on that issue. This attempted poisoning of his life happened a few days ago,” he said.

While details of the plot remain sketchy, prison officials are expected to brief the aide and Wontumi’s legal team once investigations are concluded.
