Completing the stalled Takoradi Market Circle redevelopment requires only a tiny fraction of the funds saved through recent government debt management efforts, the Member of Parliament for Takoradi, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, has asserted.

Addressing delegates at the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly on Monday, the lawmaker urged national authorities to prioritize the project, highlighting its central role in driving the local economy and supporting livelihoods across the metropolis.

Speaking during the 3rd Ordinary Meeting of the Assembly’s 3rd Session, Darko-Mensah tackled pressing concerns regarding delayed infrastructure within the area, focusing squarely on the frozen state of the flagship market development. He maintained that finishing the venture is well within reach if financial commitments align with other major national works.

Drawing a direct comparison to ongoing transport infrastructure investments elsewhere in the country, the MP questioned why similar financial backing has not been extended to the market initiative.

“We’ve secured US1.7 billion in savings from debt restructuring and cancellation. If we’ve been able to find money for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway, then finding just GH¢200 million from that US1.7 billion, which is about GH¢50 billion equivalent, to finish the Takoradi Market Circle project should be possible and necessary,” he stated.

Darko-Mensah underscored the urgency of resuming construction, emphasizing that commercial activities in Sekondi-Takoradi depend heavily on a fully functional, modernized market facility.
