President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed claims that he is intolerant of dissent, stating that he welcomes public scrutiny and constructive criticism because feedback helps him become a better leader.
Speaking during an interactive session with the Ghanaian community in Moscow, Russia, President Mahama revealed that he actively monitors social media platforms to gauge citizen sentiment and complaints, which he described as essential to democratic governance.
“There are times when I go on social media, and I see something. I call the minister responsible for an explanation and direct them to address the issue because I’ve come across some concerns. So all your TikToks and things, don’t think I don’t see them. I see them,” he said.
He referenced a recent viral video showing a bridge damaged by illegal mining operations, noting that his subsequent intervention with the Ashanti Regional Minister led to the prompt deployment of equipment to clear the blockage.
“I don’t mind if people tell me I am leading the country in the wrong direction because I am trying to do my best. Criticism helps me to do better. I am not offended,” he added.
The President, however, urged Ghanaians to place national interest and accountability above partisan loyalty.
“When we see danger signs that somebody is leading us the wrong way, all of us, regardless of partisan leanings, must say, ‘No, we are not going in the right direction.’”
