The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has issued a stern 48-hour ultimatum to traders operating at unauthorized bus stops across the capital, ordering them to cease trading and vacate these locations immediately ahead of an impending decongestion exercise.
The directive follows growing safety concerns raised by commercial drivers regarding the persistent obstruction of designated stopping points, which severely impedes the movement of vehicles and pedestrians.
City authorities noted that street hawking at bus loading points worsens traffic congestion and forces commuters to board and alight from vehicles at dangerous locations, significantly heightening the risk of road accidents.
Speaking on the enforcement drive, the Assembly highlighted that the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has already initiated clearance operations in key areas, including the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, Achimota, and parts of the Central Business District.
“The Assembly is urging all hawkers and traders to immediately vacate designated bus stops and refrain from trading in areas reserved for vehicle stopping and pedestrian movement,” stated Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of Public Affairs. “We will intensify enforcement and take necessary action against persons who disregard this directive in accordance with the Assembly’s by-laws.”
City officials further warned traders against returning to cleared spots, stressing that the reoccupation of bus stops will attract strict legal action, including prosecution, as part of efforts to maintain public order and road safety across the metropolis.
