The government has earmarked a total of GH¢685 million to initiate major coastal protection works across vulnerable shorelines in the country under the West African Coastal Areas Resilience Investment Project (WACA).

The intervention aims to tackle persistent coastal erosion, regenerate damaged ecosystems, and cushion the economic standard of living for residents in affected coastal settlements.

Addressing congregants and visitors at the 2026 Hogbetsotso Festival on Saturday, November 7, President John Dramani Mahama confirmed the rollout of the initiative, emphasizing its structural and nature-based components.

“I can answer you directly on this one and confirm that 685 million Ghana cedis has been allocated to commence coastal protection works under the West African Coastal Areas Resilience Investment Project, popularly known as WACA,” he said.

The planned operations will combine heavy engineering works—such as the construction of groynes, breakwaters, and revetments—with ecological restoration techniques. These natural interventions feature beach replenishment, lagoon and watershed rehabilitation, and dune stabilization through targeted vegetation planting to buffer vulnerable zones against sea surges.

Beyond structural defenses, the initiative incorporates social support packages to boost community resilience. President Mahama noted that the project is structured to prioritize economic opportunities for women, youth, and persons with disabilities living within the beneficiary areas.
