The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak, has lamented reasons why Ghanaians are no longer safe despite the existence of a national security minister, national security coordinator and other security agencies in the country.
The legislator who is extremely worried over the death of investigative journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale who was shot three times on Wednesday and other persons killed said, Ghanaians must be worried over the number of deaths recorded over the past two weeks.
Dr. Apaak described the murder of Ahmed as a cowardly act and asked the role of government in ensuring the security of citizens.
He is also wondering if these killings are on contract basis and called on Ghanaians to demand from the state the assurance of their safety before they become the target of these criminals and killers.
He wrote: ‘’Folks, I’ve said several times that the criminal elements seem to be on the rampage and state security agencies seem castrated to have an effect in their efforts to deal with them. This is why every Ghanaian must be worried about the assassination of Hussein-Suale who played a key role in Anas’ explosive investigations, including the legendary #12 among others.’’
He continued: ‘’Its not just about the cowardly murder of Suale in his car, a journalist! Only last week a senior Director of the GPHA was murdered in her own home. A week before that Joseph, a manager of GWCL was assassinated on his way to his hometown in the Northern Region! Not long ago a Chief in the Prampram area was assassinated and I’m sure there are other victims of these acts of lawlessness and impunity? Contract killings? What is the state/government doing to improve our security? Does government even care? Arise arise arise before you become the next victim.’’
The MP said the president of the republic who promised to protect Ghanaians must be up to the task and deliver on that promise adding, ‘’REMEMBER that the President Chairs the National Security Council and has the primary responsibility to ensure that every Ghanaian is safe and protected! REMEMBER that all these and many other acts are happening at a time we have a Minister for National Security, Minister of State at the Presidency on National Security, National Security Adviser, National Security Coordinator, Regional Security Coordinators! We also have a Minister for Interior and Deputy, Minister for Defence and his Deputy. In addition we have the IGP and his CID. Oh wait, we have the BNI too. So why can’t we feel safe when we are paying people to keep us safe! Sadly civil and moral society remain mute. Not even the house of God is safe anymore! I remain a citizen!’’
Ahmed was shot three times, twice in the chest and another in the neck late Wednesday night at Madina in Accra while driving home by unidentified men riding motorbike
Ahmed was one of Tiger Eye journalists whose photographs the member of parliament for Assign South, Kennedy Agyapong circulated in his ‘who watches the watchman’ anti-Anas video documentary and called on the public to deal with for a handsome reward.
