Artisans at Accra’s Art Centre are fighting the government and GLICO over an eviction notice.

The artisans are currently stationed in an unauthorised place due to an eviction notice.

The craftspeople must remove their current location by the end of the day on Friday, June 16.

The Artisans mourned the loss of trust between them and the government during a news conference.

Isaac Sarpong, Chairman of the Artisans’ Steering Committee, detailed how they submitted a petition to President Akufo-Addo and former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyerematen, who assured them that their matter would be addressed.

He regretted that the problem had not been solved and that they were about to be evicted.

He said that the Bank of Ghana had also received authorisation to begin work on a project in the area.

He further alleged that the Ghana Tourism Authority and the Marine Drive Authority were both unaware of Glico’s eviction notice.

He stated that the circumstance has left them in a quandary and uncertainty.

“On October 10, 2016, President Akufo-Addo, then the candidate of the NPP, came here and we presented him with a petition.” Alan Kyerematen the former Trades Minister was the one who received it. He told us that our concerns will be addressed.

However, the issues have not been resolved. The Bank of Ghana has received approval to begin work on a project as we speak. As a result, some shops will be demolished. We are not pleased with what is happening. Whatever we were promised has not been fulfilled. We have over 1,000 genuinely registered businesses.

We want the president to be informed of what is going on. If they want to evict us, they should follow through on the commitment we made when the Marine Drive Project was unveiled. We are aware that the site does not belong to us, but we do know that there was a document stating that an Arts Centre would be built as part of the Marine Drive Project.”
