The Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has criticised the arrest of over 50 Democracy Hub demonstrators, branding it as an unconstitutional.
The civil society group accused the police of employing excessive force and cruelty, refusing to provide the whole list of detained people, and restricting access to legal counsel.
CDD stated that how the protestors were treated violated their fundamental human rights and undermined the rule of law in Ghana’s constitutional democracy, weakening public faith in the legal system and public institutions.
It referenced the 1966 International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and Article 21(1)(d) of the 1992 Constitution, which protect the right to peaceful assembly, and requested the government not to violate them.
