The Accra Metropolitan Assemblyy (AMA) has launched Operation “Red Line”, a new demarcation strategy aimed at improving pedestrian safety and regulating street trading in the Central Business District.

Metropolitan Chief Executive Officer (MCE) for the AMA, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, explained that this forms part of the AMA’s broader decongestion exercise.

He said this would involve the clear marking of red lines on pavements and walkways to designate specific zones for pedestrian use and controlled trading activities.

On Tuesday, May 20, the AMA launched a decongestion exercise across major parts of the Central Business District (CBD) to clear unauthorised trading activities from pavements and on the streets.

The operation, which began at 4:00 a.m. and was supervised by the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, targeted Kinbu Street and extended through Makola, CMB, Circle, and Kaneshie.

The exercise continued on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, targeting Circle Neoplan Station, Makola and other areas.

In an interaction with hawkers, during the exercise, Mr Allotey reiterated that the operation was a necessity, not an act of aggression, stressing that it aimed to clean Accra and make it a model capital for the sub-region.
