Digital Realty Engages with Communication Ministry to Advance National Data Infrastructure

May 22, 2025

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), today received a delegation from Digital Realty to discuss the company’s expansion into Ghana’s digital ecosystem and also explore potential areas for strategic collaboration.

During the meeting, the minister outlined Ghana’s ambitious national data infrastructure agenda, revealing that legislation mandating all data centres to connect to a unified national data repository is expected by the end of 2025. “We are building a national repository that integrates data from both government and private entities,” he noted, emphasising the importance of this infrastructure in supporting real-time analytics and decision-making.

Hon. George welcomed Digital Realty’s entry into the Ghanaian market, highlighting the pivotal role of private sector participation in accelerating the development of critical digital infrastructure. “Banks, financial intelligence units—all will depend on this system. Without private sector involvement, progress would be much slowe”r, he stated.

Under the forthcoming regulatory framework, three key agencies will oversee data centre operations in the country. The National Information Technology Agency (NITA) will assume a strengthened oversight role; the Cyber Security Authority will monitor security systems; and the Data Protection Commission will supervise data processing practices.

“Today, we struggle to make critical data-driven decisions because various agencies operate in silo”s, but with proper integration and AI, we can unlock deeper insights,” he explained.

Digital Realty operates across 25 countries with over 300 data centres globally, with a presence in Africa (Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Mozambique, South Africa and other regional markets).

Digital Realty’s operations in Ghana are expected to significantly expand the country’s data centre capacity, improving redundancy and reliability for critical digital services across both public and private sectors.

The Digital Realty delegation was led by Joseph Koranteng, the MD for Ghana, who highlighted details of Digital Realty’s operations in Ghana and its impact on the digital ecosystem.
