The Energy and Green Transition Minister, John Jinapor, has announced that Ghana plans to establish a barter arrangement with Nigeria. Under this deal, Ghana would export electricity in exchange for gas.

He disclosed this at the Future Energy Conference (FEC), hosted by the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), which was themed
“Financing Africa’s Energy Future: Unlocking Investments for Energy Access and Economic Transformation.”

The event focused on mobilizing investments to tackle energy poverty and accelerate the continent’s economic transformation.

Mr. Jinapor indicated that the framework would strengthen regional energy security and deepen integration across West Africa.

“We believe we can work together. Ghana takes gas from Nigeria, generates power, and re-exports,” he said. “We are in discussions to see if we can create a barter arrangement where we take their gas, convert it into power, and supply electricity back to Nigeria in the spirit of West African cooperation.”

Mr. Jinapor also assured that Ghana remains a major contributor of power, supplying electricity to Togo, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, and Benin.

According to him, Ghana’s nuclear energy program remains a possibility as part of its efforts to build a reliable base-load supply for the subregion.

In attendance at the event were government officials, multilateral institutions, private sector actors, academics, and civil society.

The event offered participants an opportunity to discuss the governance, innovation, and policies required to close Africa’s energy access gap.
