Ghana has deposited its instrument of ratification of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), marking a major step in its longstanding commitment to international peace and security.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP), during the commemoration of the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.

This milestone continues Ghana’s historic leadership in disarmament, which dates back to 1962 when the country convened the “World Without a Bomb Conference” in Accra under the leadership of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Ghana has since been a strong advocate for Africa’s nuclear-free status and has consistently contributed to global initiatives aimed at eliminating weapons of mass destruction.

The Minister indicated that the ratification demonstrates Ghana’s commitment to strengthening international legal instruments such as the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and reinforces the country’s position that effective multilateralism is essential for building global trust and ensuring collective security.

It also reflects Ghana’s call for a fair and balanced approach to disarmament, non-proliferation, and the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

By finalising its ratification of the TPNW, which was signed in 2017 and ratified by Parliament in July 2025, Ghana aligns itself with a growing number of states determined to achieve a nuclear-free world.

This step consolidates Ghana’s foreign policy priorities and underscores its enduring role as a champion of peace on the African continent and beyond.

The Minster also posted on his official Facebook page about the move saying “Yesterday, Ghana boldly demonstrated to the world that we shall be a Nuclear-Weapon-Free State by depositing our instrument of ratification on the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) at the UN.

I commend the Ghanaian Cabinet and Parliament for the unanimous ratification.

As I indicated in my UN address, Ghana has been consistent across all political parties in advocating for total disarmament and creating a new world without nuclear weapons.

Ghana’s Founder, Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah who convened the 1962 World Without the Bomb conference in Accra would be absolutely proud of this moment.

It was an honour to meet with the inspiring Melissa Parke and Seth Shelden of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). ICAN won the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize for their groundbreaking work to attain a world without nuclear weapons.

We shall triumph, and end global impunity.

For God, Country and the World. ???????? ???????? ????????”
