Galamsey threatens Ghana’s reputation as a West African drug hub

September 29, 2025
Pharmacy

Dr. Richmond Adusa-Poku, an Executive Member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, has underscored the urgent need for authorities to implement strict measures to combat illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey. He warned that Ghana’s reputation as a hub for quality pharmaceuticals in the sub-region is at risk.

Dr. Adusa-Poku explained that several African countries, including Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Angola, and Togo, rely on Ghana for their drug imports.

He stressed the importance of preserving this reputation, noting that Ghana also hosts the headquarters of a prominent pharmaceutical society in Africa.

“The drugs manufactured in Ghana are highly regarded for their quality,” he stated. “If the countries that import our drugs learn that illegal mining is threatening our food security and destroying our water sources, it could severely damage our credibility.”

He called for Ghanaians to act decisively, describing galamsey as a national security threat. “Galamsey will destroy this country, and I believe Ghanaians must rise and demand action,” he asserted. He dismissed the argument that illegal miners lack sustainable jobs, stating, “The few Ghanaians engaged in galamsey cannot be allowed to compromise the safety, security, and health of the majority. We must not wait until we reach a point of no return before taking action.”
