Security analyst Andrews Asiedu Tetteh has asserted that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohonu, erred when he appeared before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to respond to certain questions.
The analyst observed that the IGP “appears to be losing steam” and requires guidance.
A heated exchange occurred on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, between the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohonu, and the Chair of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Abena Osei Asare, regarding the IGP’s response to the recent attacks at the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region.
The Police had withdrawn officers following attacks by youth, an approach the Chair argued “was not the best.”
The discussion intensified when the IGP suggested that communities seeking police presence should construct their own stations. He contended that government-funded facilities were frequently the primary targets of mob attacks, while community-funded ones were spared.
The IGP offered his rationale, stating: “We have one police station, which is a divisional headquarters built by the government and another built by the locals. When they wanted to attack, they went to the one built by the government. They came to the other and someone said, ‘No, this one is built by the MP, let’s not touch it.’ So today, if you ask us to open a police station, we will ask you to build the police station yourself,” the IGP explained.
Responding to the IGP’s statement, Andrews Asiedu Tetteh characterised it as a “terrible reaction” and unprofessional on the part of the IGP.
He affirmed that the assault of police officers by civilians is unacceptable and that such persons must be arrested and prosecuted.
However, Mr Tetteh expressed strong disapproval of the IGP’s suggestion regarding community funding, stating:
“However, for the IGP to say that persons who want police stations in their communities should construct them themselves was below the belt. He goofed and I wish he was not the one who made such remarks. Anyone who would make such remarks lacks understanding of security issues. The government should be responsible in constructing police stations and other facilities that help maintain stability, security and sanity across the country. If there are individuals or philanthropists who want to build police stations in collaboration with the state this is positive. But that responsibility is purely for the government to do.”
Mr Tetteh further stressed that it is not the IGP’s prerogative to make such a determination concerning the funding model for state security infrastructure.
The analyst added that the current government appears to be losing control over the country’s security situation, arguing:
“The government has lost control on security issues. It has to do its best in maintaining safety and security of the people by constructing more police stations to make it easier for Ghanaians to have access to the police.”
He concluded by criticizing the IGP’s handling of the Kukurantumi incident:
“The IGP is making so much mistakes following what happened at Kukurantumi. His decision to withdraw the officers from the area was a big mistake. What was the motive behind that decision especially when there is a violent incident in the community. Officials must call him to order because he is goofing.”
