Commencing January 2026, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) will issue vehicle licence plates in the names of individual owners, enhancing road safety and security.
A statement from the DVLA indicates that the new system will directly link each vehicle number to its owner, who will be responsible for removing the plate during ownership transfer.
The DVLA instructs vehicle owners to treat number plates as personal identifiers, safeguarding them accordingly.
“When vehicles are transferred from the immediate owner, that owner owes a responsibility to himself to take off the number to allow the new owner to go through the process to secure an assigned number to be fixed on the vehicle,” the statement added.
It explained that this will allow the security agencies to link a unique vehicle number to an individual, strengthening law enforcement and safety within the transport system.
