The legislator is standing trial for his alleged involvement in the Hwidiem galamsey riot. He has been provisionally charged with assault on a public officer, unlawful damage, and rioting with weapons.

Mr. Addo was granted bail in the sum of GH¢150,000 and is required to report to investigators every two weeks until the order is reversed or the trial commences.

The court has cautioned him against engaging in any conduct that could frustrate the ongoing investigation.

Chief Inspector Alex Odonkor, who led the prosecution, informed the court that the case has assumed a national character and is now being handled by the CID Headquarters.

He noted that the MP’s influence could potentially interfere with investigations, referencing videos circulating on social media allegedly showing scenes of the incident, and raising concerns about potential witness tampering or evidence interference.

The defence team opposed the prosecution’s request for remand, arguing that the accused is entitled to the constitutional presumption of innocence.

According to the lawyers for the MP, he (MP) had several responsibilities including caring for a newborn baby.

His lawyers assured the court that he has a permanent place of residence in Accra and would fully cooperate with investigators.

The case was adjourned to December 1, 2025.

Other accused persons, including Zakaria Yakubu, one Alex, and others, are currently at large.
