A statement issued regarding the matter revealed that the former minister is cooperating fully with ICE while his lawyers engage the authorities to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

It further noted that Mr Ofori-Atta, who is currently wanted in Ghana to face prosecution in connection with corruption and corruption-related offences, has a pending petition for adjustment of status.

This process under US law allows an individual to remain legally in the country beyond the validity of an initial visa.

According to his lawyers, this is a common immigration procedure, and they expect the matter to be resolved expeditiously.

The statement added that Mr Ofori-Atta remains a law-abiding individual and is working closely with US immigration authorities to regularise his status while continuing his medical recovery.

Former Ghana Finance Minister Mr Ofori-Atta, according to his family, is undergoing medical treatment in the US for prostate cancer and a post-COVID condition after being diagnosed in March 2025 and February 2021, respectively.

He recently underwent surgery at the Mayo Clinic.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor formally charged former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML), and six other individuals with corruption and corruption-related offenses in November 2025.

A total of 78 counts of corruption and corruption-related offenses have been leveled against them.

The other accused individuals include Ernest Darko Akore, 67, Chief of Staff to the Finance Minister; Emmanuel Kofi Nti, 66, former Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA); Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, 64, former Commissioner-General of GRA; Isaac Crentsil, 63, former Commissioner of the Customs Division of GRA; Kwadwo Damoah, 65, former Commissioner of the Customs Division of GRA; and Evans Adusei, 62, beneficial owner, CEO, and controlling mind of the accused company.

Additionally, the accused parties comprise Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd (SML), formerly known as Strategic Mobilisation Enhancement Ltd., the company in question.
