Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has reiterated Ghana’s dedication to advancing the political participation and leadership of women and young people across West Africa, during a High-Level Regional Consultation on inclusive governance in the sub-region.

In her address, she acknowledged that although West African countries have adopted important policy frameworks and regional commitments, representation of women and youth in decision-making spaces remains disproportionately low.

She outlined Ghana’s ongoing reforms aimed at correcting this imbalance, including the operationalisation of the Affirmative Action Act to strengthen women’s representation in public leadership. Under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama promoting gender equity continues to be treated as a national governance priority.

The Vice President also highlighted measures to deepen youth participation through initiatives spearheaded by the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment and the National Youth Authority, aimed at empowering young people to actively shape policy and national development.

She stressed that inclusive leadership is essential to democratic resilience and institutional effectiveness, noting that governance systems function best when they reflect the diversity of the populations they serve.

Ghana, she affirmed, remains open to collaboration with the Economic Community of West African States and other regional partners to exchange knowledge, strengthen capacity, and accelerate progress.
