The President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has urged supporters and individuals travelling to North America for the 2026 World Cup to return home after the tournament, condemning the trend of some fans who overstay their visas abroad after global events.
During his State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Friday, February 27, 2026, he highlighted the country’s efforts to address the ban imposed on several African countries by the US.
“Supporters and other people interested in going to support the team would have to submit visa requests to the American Embassy,” he said.
“We are being told that we must ensure that supporters who go [to the tournament] return on the visas. It has taken a lot of work to restore Ghana’s five-year non-immigrant visas and take us off the ban list.
“It is my hope that this event will not send thousands of Ghanaians to America and get us back on the ban list.”
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is the largest edition in history, featuring an expanded field of 48 teams and a total of 104 matches.
The Black Stars of Ghana secured their spot in the tournament by finishing top of CAF Qualifying Group I.
They have been drawn into Group L, where they will face a challenging mix of European heavyweights and a rising CONCACAF contender.
The teams are England, Croatia and Panama.
