A devastating early morning blaze in Kodjona, located within the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region, has claimed the lives of a married couple and left their four-year-old son in critical condition.
The fire, which eyewitnesses believe broke out around 6:30 a.m., trapped the family of three inside their home as the flames rapidly intensified.
While the couple tragically succumbed to the incident, their young son miraculously survived the ordeal; he is currently fighting for his life at a local hospital.
The emergency response began at approximately 7:15 a.m. when Alormenyo Joycelyn Dansowaa, the Zonal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), received a distress call and immediately dispatched assistance to the location.
Following this alert, the Ghana National Fire Service from Somanya arrived swiftly on the scene to combat and eventually contain the inferno.
Despite their efforts, the couple was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Atua Government Hospital, where their bodies now remain pending an autopsy.
Preliminary reports suggest the morning had started as any other for the family.
The wife was reportedly preparing to do laundry, while the husband had briefly stepped out and returned after procuring insecticide to treat a bedbug infestation.
The swiftness of the disaster drew a significant crowd of residents and high-ranking officials, including the Municipal Chief Executive for Lower Manya Krobo, Simon Kweku Tetteh, who visited the site to assess the damage.
Officers from the Odumase Krobo Police Station also attended the scene to secure the area and facilitate the transfer of the deceased.
The cause of the outbreak remains unknown; however, authorities have launched a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
In the wake of this loss, officials are urgently reminding the public to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to fire safety protocols to prevent future occurrences.
