GFA wants elite, not local: J.E. Sarpong rules out Ghanaian coaches for Black Stars role

April 1, 2026
sarpong

Veteran Ghanaian coach Mr J.E. Sarpong has dismissed the possibility of a local tactician being appointed as the head coach of the senior national team following the dismissal of Otto Addo.

Mr Sarpong was categorical in his assessment, asserting that under no circumstances would the Ghana Football Association (GFA) entrust the Black Stars to a homegrown handler at this time.

Speaking on Rainbow Sports, he argued that the criteria for leading the national team now extend far beyond mere technical competence.

According to Sarpong, the GFA maintains a specific “elite” standard for the role, effectively barring local coaches who do not fit a certain profile or international standing.

He emphasised that the GFA is looking for a specific pedigree that he believes local coaches currently lack in the eyes of the association’s leadership.

“The GFA will not hand over the job to a local coach. I am telling you the truth. Never will it happen that a local coach would be granted the opportunity to coach [now]… Coaching the Black Stars is not a joke; it is not an easy task.”

He further elaborated on the intangible qualities the GFA seeks: “There are many things you must possess as a coach to manage the Black Stars. The GFA wants a top-class coach to hand the team over to. They don’t want just any coach. You should be in that class of coaches before you can coach the team.”
