April 11, 2026

The University for Development Studies (UDS) has issued a stern demand for a public apology and an immediate retraction from several media houses following the misidentification of one of its students in reports concerning a recent robbery.

In a formal press statement released by the Office of the Registrar, the university clarified that Mr. Prosper Kaba, an MPhil student at the institution, was not a participant in the alleged crime but was instead a victim of the incident.

The university expressed deep concern over the conduct of various media outlets, specifically citing Joy News and Citi News for publishing Mr. Kaba’s image alongside reports of criminal activity.

According to the statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Abdul-Hayi Moomen, the circulation of these erroneous reports has caused the student significant reputational harm and psychological distress.

UDS noted that the image in question, which depicts Mr. Kaba as the first person from the left, was wrongly associated with suspected perpetrators due to a lack of adequate verification by journalists prior to publication.

Beyond the immediate retraction of the misleading content, the university is calling for a clear and unqualified public apology to be rendered to Mr. Kaba.

The management further urged media practitioners to correct the narrative by explicitly identifying him as a victim.

UDS emphasised the need for higher standards of journalistic accuracy and responsibility, reminding media houses that such lapses have serious implications for the lives and dignity of individuals.

The institution concluded by stating that it expects the affected media organizations to act swiftly to rectify the misinformation.
