Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has underscored the imperative for systemic reform within the justice delivery mechanism as Ghana’s Supreme Court commemorates its 150th anniversary.
Delivering his remarks at the official launch of the anniversary celebrations on Thursday, 16 April 2026, the Chief Justice maintained that this historic milestone must serve as a catalyst for evolution rather than merely an exercise in nostalgia.
He opined that the significance of the sesquicentennial lies in its capacity to shape the long-term trajectory of the judiciary.
“Today, we launch the celebration of the Supreme Court of Ghana at 150 under the theme ‘Honouring the past, celebrating the present, and defining the future.’ This anniversary is more than a milestone; it is a moment for honest reflection, quiet gratitude, and bold hope,” he said.
In his view, the true weight of this anniversary transcends the chronological age of the institution. He has, therefore, urged all legal stakeholders to prioritise the tangible impact of the court’s work over the mere celebration of its longevity.
“150 years is remarkable, but history will not judge us by how long the court has existed; it will judge us by what we did with the moment entrusted to us. Whether we merely celebrated the past or whether we had the courage to celebrate a brighter future,” he added.
The Chief Justice further articulated a vision for a modernised legal landscape, stressing that the legacy of this celebration must be rooted in practical improvements to the experience of the citizen.
“This anniversary therefore must be remembered as a commitment to faster justice, accessible justice, to transparent justice and a judiciary worthy of the enduring trust of the Ghanaian people,” he stated.
