ECG Tema Region urges public assistance to curb equipment tampering amidst rising repair costs

April 20, 2026
ecg-1

The Tema Regional branch of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has urged residents within the region to report any individuals caught tampering with the company’s equipment.

According to the branch, these unauthorised acts are a primary cause of power outages and irregular load-shedding—disruptions that are often unfairly blamed on the ECG itself.

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio, the Public Relations Officer for the ECG Tema Region, Madam Sekyibea Mensah, explained that while no arrests have been made regarding recent tampering incidents, the company is actively pursuing leads and will take action once concrete information is received.

She emphasised that interfering with transformers or any ECG property without authorisation is a criminal offence that carries the penalty of imprisonment.

Madam Mensah warned that any individuals caught engaging in such acts would face full prosecution.

Addressing the company’s maintenance schedule, she clarified that work is carried out daily as faults or equipment damages are reported.

When questioned on when the ECG would “finish” its maintenance, she stressed that the work is an ongoing necessity rather than a one-off project.

Furthermore, Madam Mensah stated that members of the public are strictly prohibited from touching transformers, poles, pylons, cables, or metres, even when they develop faults.

“We are calling on the various communities and members of the public to help safeguard the property of ECG. If you see people tampering with any of our transformers, you can raise an alarm. Help us to arrest such individuals.”

The region has reportedly spent millions of Ghana cedis repairing transformers destroyed through unauthorised activities. Providing a specific financial breakdown, Madam Mensah revealed that the office spent a total of GHS 13,079,669 on transformer replacements during the final quarter of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026.
