In a statement released to address growing concerns within the digital economy, the central bank confirmed that earnings derived from global platforms—specifically citing X (formerly Twitter)—are officially classified as service export proceeds.

According to the regulator, creators are entitled to receive their funds through Foreign Exchange Accounts held with local commercial banks or directly into Ghana Cedi accounts, provided the transactions adhere to standard regulatory protocols.

The intervention follows a wave of reports from influencers and digital entrepreneurs regarding significant hurdles in accessing their remuneration from abroad.

While the central bank noted that such difficulties should not typically occur if transactions are processed correctly, it acknowledged the feedback from those affected by recent payment bottlenecks.

To resolve these technical and administrative friction points, the Bank of Ghana stated it is currently engaging with relevant financial institutions to pinpoint the origin of the access issues.

The regulator reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a stable financial environment that supports cross-border trade, promising ongoing engagement with stakeholders to ensure a seamless resolution for the country’s expanding digital workforce.
