The Volta River Authority (VRA), headquartered at Akosombo in the Eastern Region, has issued a definitive “buyer beware” notice to the general public.

The authority is cautioning prospective investors against entering into land transactions with unauthorised individuals in the Akuse and Akosombo areas, stressing that those who build on VRA property without permission do so at their own peril.

During a stakeholders’ engagement management plan meeting regarding the 2026 Emergency Preparedness Plan (EPP) held on Thursday 22, April, 2026 in the Odumase Krobo Municipality, the Director of the Environment and Sustainable Development Department of the VRA, Mr Patrick Mireku, delivered a firm message to opinion leaders and residents of Akuse and Kpong.

He warned that any individual who engages in land deals with certain chiefs does so at their own risk.

Mr Mireku further explained that those risking their capital to purchase VRA lands in Akosombo face the total loss of their investment or the future demolition of their properties. He clarified that the third parties selling these plots have no legal claim to the lands in question.

Additionally, the Director highlighted the strain on local law enforcement, noting that limited and inadequate patrol resources within the Ghana Police Service in the Akosombo area continue to hinder an effective response to these land-related crimes.

“Any individual who engages in land deals with some Chief does it in their own risks. This could lead to the total loss of investment or the future demolitions of properties, as VRA has no legal claim to the lands in question.”

Supporting these concerns, Engineer Philip Tetteh Padi, the Principal Water Resources Manager for the VRA, expressed deep worry over the rise of criminal activities on VRA-owned territory.

He called for urgent security interventions, indicating that reported land cases have increased significantly. Mr Padi emphasised the necessity of these interventions to ensure that the rightful heritage of the Volta River Authority is preserved for future generations.
