The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced the disbursement of over GH₵157 million to healthcare providers across Ghana, marking a significant step in addressing long-standing arrears within the sector.

The payments, released throughout April 2026, are intended to bolster the financial stability of medical facilities and ensure the continuous delivery of essential services to National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) members.

A statement issued by the Authority’s Claims Directorate confirmed that the total sum was distributed in two distinct tranches.

An initial payment of GH₵43.7 million was made on April 14, followed by a larger disbursement of GH₵113.6 million on April 30.

This funding covers a combination of recently vetted claims through March 2026 and a backlog of unvetted claims dating as far back as 2019.

The NHIA attributed the delay in settling these older debts to specific administrative challenges that have now been resolved.

The breakdown of the disbursement reveals that private healthcare providers received the largest portion of the funds, with public and mission-based facilities following.

Data provided by the Authority indicates that high-volume hospitals accounted for 64 per cent of the total claims. In comparison, clinics and health centres received 23 per cent, while CHPS compounds and specialised facilities accounted for 9 per cent and 4 per cent respectively.

The Corporate Affairs Directorate emphasised that this prompt settlement of claims is central to the NHIA’s broader commitment to maintaining a robust healthcare system.

By clearing outstanding arrears, the Authority aims to strengthen the operational capacity of health facilities nationwide and remove financial barriers to patient care.

Management has reiterated its resolve to continue streamlining the payment process to prevent the future accumulation of debt
