Court rejects lawyer’s request to exit Chairman Wontumi and Akonta Mining case

The Accra High Court’s Criminal Division has thrown out a request by attorney Andy Appiah-Kubi to formally withdraw from representing Akonta Mining Company Limited, Kwame Antwi, and Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party who is widely known as Chairman Wontumi.

This decision came after the court agreed with a preliminary objection raised by the Attorney-General, who argued that the motion was unnecessary and did not require a judicial ruling.

The court determined that the application was legally flawed because lawyers do not actually need judicial permission to terminate their services for a client.

Consequently, the court dismissed the application and clarified that submitting closing arguments is optional for the involved parties.

However, the judge did push back the deadline for filing any final written addresses to June 23, 2026.

The legal dispute will reconvene on July 3, 2026, when the court is scheduled to deliver its final judgment.

This situation arose after Mr. Appiah-Kubi publicly stated his desire to walk away from the trial due to frustrations over how the court was conducting the proceedings, a move the Attorney-General’s office successfully blocked by forcing the court to rule the withdrawal request invalid.
