The Government of Ghana has officially declared Friday, July 3, 2026, as a public holiday to mark this year’s Republic Day celebrations.

Although Republic Day itself falls on Wednesday, July 1, President John Dramani Mahama exercised his executive powers to push the statutory holiday forward to the end of the week, creating a long weekend for workers across the country.

The directive was contained in an official statement issued on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, and signed by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak.

According to the Ministry, the adjustment was made via an Executive Instrument (E.I) in line with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601), as amended.

“The general public is hereby informed that Wednesday, 1st July 2026, marks Republic Day, which is a Statutory Public Holiday,” the statement noted.

“However, in view of the fact that 1st July 2026 falls on a Wednesday, His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, has… declared Friday, 3rd July 2026, as a Public Holiday.”

The Ministry added that the day should be observed as such throughout the country. Wednesday, July 1, will remain a regular working day, with the official time off taking effect on Friday.
