Ghanaian jersey traders count the cost after early World Cup exit

Traders across Ghana have been left counting the financial losses following the Black Stars’ early exit from the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The national team’s elimination in the round of 32 has triggered a sharp decline in the sale of replica jerseys, leaving wholesalers and retailers with vast amounts of unsold stock.

Speaking to reporters on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem programme, market vendors across the country expressed deep disappointment.

While many admitted that an early exit was always a possibility, they had hoped the team would progress further into the tournament to sustain consumer demand.

Prior to Ghana’s elimination, market activity was buoyant, with replica shirts retailing between GH₵100 and GH₵350 depending on the quality.

Now, facing a sudden collapse in interest, many vendors are slashing prices simply to recoup their initial capital.

“Ghanaians will no longer buy the jerseys because we have been knocked out,” one market trader explained.

“While they were still in the tournament, we made significant sales. Now that they are out, we are in a dilemma as to whether anyone will buy them at all.”

The sentiment was shared by other vendors, some of whom are now facing severe cash-flow issues.

“I am not sure Ghanaians will buy them now,” another vendor said. “We are out, so sales will stop. I don’t even know if we can return them to the wholesalers to demand a refund.”

For the trading community, the national team’s performance on the pitch is directly tied to their livelihood.

“It was our hope that the team would have progressed further, but unfortunately we are out,” a third trader added. “Business would have been great if we had gone through.”

With the tournament continuing without Ghana, local merchants are now left with the difficult task of clearing football merchandise from a disappointed public.
