The Director of Elections for the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahdi Gibril, has questioned the opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to elect Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as its presidential candidate over Kennedy Agyapong.
He asserted that the NPP lacks the capacity to evaluate and elect individuals of substance to lead the party. According to him, the party traditionally votes for individuals based on perceived long-standing struggle and multiple failed attempts rather than evaluating candidates on their actual competence.
Appearing on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he posited that the NPP appears directionless and lacking in true leadership. He further argued that the party’s relentless calls for unity ahead of the general elections are merely part of a calculated plot to regain power and exploit state resources.
“The NPP keeps saying if they unite, they will win the elections. Their agenda is to win the elections so they will be able to return to power and steal from Ghanaians. Criminals can unite and rob people. That is exactly what they want to do to us,” he stated.
Mahdi Gibril described the NPP as “scammers” who have no genuine interest in transforming the country, but are instead focused on returning to loot state assets. He added that while the party’s recent regional executive elections are complete, that alone does not guarantee electoral victory.
Speaking to host Kwabena Agyapong, he stated that the continuous pleas for internal reconciliation expose the false promises made by Dr Bawumia, who had assured the party that he was a unifier capable of leading them to victory. He noted that these ongoing calls for unity demonstrate that the NPP remains deeply divided, directly contradicting the assurances of its flagbearer.
Mahdi Gibril concluded that the NPP suffers from poor analytical judgment when choosing its officials, a flaw that consistently undermines the quality of candidates the party elects.
