Despite Ghana’s recent economic recovery, 56.4 per cent of the population remains in poverty, with spatial disparities widening across the country, according to the World Bank.
Speaking at the launch of the tenth Ghana Economic Update in Accra, the World Bank Division Director for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, Robert R. Taliercio, observed that strong headline economic growth has failed to translate into improved living conditions for many households.
Ghana’s economy expanded by 6 per cent in 2025 and accelerated to 6.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2026. However, Mr Taliercio cautioned that growth alone cannot resolve the nation’s development challenges, particularly as current expansion is concentrated in sectors with limited job creation capacity.
He highlighted a troubling disconnect between high-level economic performance and the daily realities of citizens, noting that spatial disparities continue to broaden. The situation is further compounded by a rapidly growing youth population entering the labour market over the next decade.
Describing the trend as a structural imbalance requiring urgent attention, Mr Taliercio urged government to prioritise policies that drive job creation, boost productivity, and ensure the benefits of economic growth are distributed across all regions.
