The Director-General of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department, ACP Alexander Kwaku Obeng, has sought to clear the air regarding the roll-out of the newly launched automated traffic enforcement platform, TraffiTech-GH.
Speaking exclusively on Rainbow Radio’s flagship news programme, Nyankonton Mu Nsem, the police chief explained that the digital initiative was designed to assist police operations rather than render physical officers redundant on the nation’s highways.
The Interior Ministry unveiled the technology-led system aimed at identifying, tracking, and penalising motorists who breach traffic codes.
Addressing the media during the Government Accountability Series, Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak detailed that the initiative relies on static surveillance cameras and tracking devices mounted along major thoroughfares to capture violations in real time.
Under the framework, captured digital evidence is instantly routed to a central control hub for human verification, after which automated electronic tickets and notifications are dispatched directly to offending motorists.
Elaborating on the deployment, ACP Obeng stated that the cameras are being positioned at high-risk collision zones and critical junctions nationwide.
He reiterated that the technology is not meant as a aggressive trap for drivers, but rather as an efficient tool to instil discipline, encourage voluntary compliance, and curb the spate of carnage on Ghanaian roads.
“TraffiTech-GH was designed to assist police operations, not to replace officers or make them redundant on our highways. We are deploying these surveillance cameras across high-risk collision zones and critical junctions nationwide.
This technology is not meant to trap drivers. It is an efficient tool to instill discipline, encourage voluntary compliance, and curb road carnage in Ghana.”
