At least seven people have died and one remains missing after an illegal gold mine collapsed in Amansie South District in the Ashanti of Ghana.
Emergency services are attempting to reach the final trapped worker following Thursday night’s cave-in at Manso Kaneago, in the Amansie South Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
A group of 12 miners were working underground when the earth gave way at around 22:00 local time. Four workers managed to scramble to safety, but eight were entombed beneath the rubble.
Rescue teams comprising officers from the National Disaster Management Organisation, local police, and members of the District Security Council have retrieved seven bodies from the pit. The remains have been taken to a local mortuary for formal identification.
The cause of the structural failure is not yet known, and emergency services are continuing search operations at the site.
Speaking to local media, Benjamin Marfo, the Municipal Chief Executive for Amansie South, said he was leading an assessment team to the scene to establish the full facts surrounding the disaster. An official investigation into the cause of the collapse is underway.
