A 21-year-old man, Mathias Kpodovia, drowned in the Volta Lake at Isaka Kura, near Yeji in the Pru East District, after a cow panicked aboard a transit canoe on Sunday, 6 September 2026.
The tragedy occurred around 11:30 a.m. along the Isaka Kura–Tonka–Yeji waterway. The vessel was transporting six individuals—including the operator—alongside a livestock cow and a tricycle.
The operator, identified as Promise, explained that trouble began when the cow started thrashing uncontrollably mid-voyage. The sudden commotion terrified two passengers, who leaped into the water.
While five occupants survived, Kpodovia went under. Local search parties were immediately dispatched, retrieving his body several hours later.
Police officers have since deposited the body at Matthias Hospital for preservation and further inquiry.
