Over 4,500 Health Facilities Enrolled in Free Primary Care Scheme — Akandoh

A total of 4,574 medical centres nationwide are now delivering services under the government’s Free Primary Health Care scheme, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh revealed at a media briefing on Monday, 7 September 2026.

The initial rollout targets 135 out of 216 districts across all 16 regions, intentionally prioritising under-served areas like the Upper West, Upper East, Oti, and Western North regions to reach vulnerable communities first. The ultimate goal of the intervention is to secure universal coverage across every corner of the country by late 2027.

“We have 135 districts out of the 216, and they are all in the 16 regions. So in every region, we have selected the deprived district to be part of the first phase,” he said.

The participating network comprises 3,781 CHPS compounds, 746 health centres, and 48 polyclinics. To maximize reach, the scheme extends beyond state-owned institutions to include non-public providers such as the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) and Ahmadiyya facilities.

“We’re not leaving anybody behind,” Akandoh said, reiterating the government’s drive to expand essential healthcare access nationwide.
