The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has assured traders that the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project will not displace any shops in the commercial hub.
According to the association, members will continue to operate their businesses uninterrupted while construction works proceed.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem, Public Relations Officer for the association, Mr Takyi Addo, explained that the GARID project is being executed in two phases. He expressed optimism that the government will complete both phases to bring lasting relief to traders and residents.
He noted that a majority of traders have already received compensation, with the remaining few scheduled to be paid shortly. He clarified that the compensation is not for property demolition, but rather to cushion traders against the temporary inconveniences caused by the ongoing construction.
When asked about the exact financial package involved, Mr Addo declined to disclose specific figures, but indicated that payments range from GH¢9,560 upwards.
“We want to extend our gratitude to GARID and the Ministry of Finance. We support the project and appreciate the efforts in dealing with the flood situation. Anytime it rains, Abossey Okai floods with no drains for the water to move. So we appreciate them for what they want to do.
“Officials from GARID have met with us, explained the scope of the project to us, and offered to pay compensation. Some traders have already received compensation. The rest will receive theirs in due course. The project is in two phases. Phase two will see to the rehabilitation of the one-way road from Abossey Okai through to Accra Academy,” he added.
Mr Addo reiterated that traders will not be required to close their shops during the period, stressing that the financial packages are meant to provide relief for any disruption. He added that the timing of the project could not be better, given its immense benefits to the area.
Meanwhile, as construction works commenced on Monday, September 7, 2026, motorists and commuters have been advised to note the planned traffic diversions around the Kaneshie enclave to prevent unnecessary delays.
