Athletic Bilbao forward Iñaki Williams has officially announced his retirement from international football, drawing the curtain on his career with Ghana’s Black Stars.

The 32-year-old attacker, who switched international allegiance from Spain to Ghana in 2022, shared an emotional farewell message confirming his decision to step away from the national team setup after earning 28 caps and representing the nation at major global tournaments.

Reflecting on his time wearing the national colors, Williams expressed gratitude and satisfaction with his contribution to the team.

“I feel the time has come to bring my journey with the Ghana national team to an end. I leave happy, proud and with the peace of mind of knowing that I gave everything every time I wore this shirt,” he stated.

Born in Bilbao to Ghanaian parents, the forward highlighted how representing Ghana offered him a profound connection to his heritage beyond the sport itself.

“Ghana has given me much more than football. It has allowed me to come back home, feel even closer to my roots and experience the enormous pride of representing my country and wearing this flag on my chest,” Williams noted.

He went on to thank the supporters and the footballing community who rallied behind him throughout his international journey.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has been part of this journey and for all the love you have always shown me. Ghana will always be a part of me. I will continue supporting the Black Stars as one of you, wherever I am. Medaase. Always Ghana,” he concluded.

Williams steps down from international duty to focus entirely on his club career with Athletic Club in La Liga, while pledging his ongoing support for the Black Stars as a fan.
