President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to accountable governance, transparent decision-making and direct engagement with citizens as he interacted with residents of the Upper West Region during the ‘Resetting Ghana’ Citizen Engagement in Wa.
Addressing concerns raised by citizens, the President highlighted progress and ongoing interventions in infrastructure, healthcare, education, job creation and economic transformation.
President Mahama said government’s infrastructure agenda is designed not only to address Ghana’s infrastructure deficit but to build the foundations for sustained economic growth, beginning with major trunk roads and progressively extending to feeder roads across the country.
On healthcare, he highlighted the expansion of Free Primary Healthcare, noting that NHIS coverage has increased to 76 per cent, while communities are gaining access to essential maternal and child health services closer to home.
In education, the President reiterated government’s commitment to ending the double-track system by the end of 2027, while emphasising the need to restore discipline, integrity and effective teaching and learning in Ghana’s schools.
President Mahama also outlined government’s strategy to expand employment opportunities through the 24-Hour Economy, encouraging private-sector investment, additional production shifts and entrepreneurship as pathways to creating sustainable jobs for young people.
He further announced plans for significant investment in strategic sectors under the proposed New Economy Programme, alongside initiatives including the Women’s Development Bank, the construction of the Upper West Airport, support for local agricultural production and the expansion of economic opportunities across the regions.
Responding to concerns on education policy, the President clarified that there is no approved government policy making Arabic or Chinese compulsory subjects in public schools.
He also reiterated his position on the National Cathedral, stating that while he has no objection to the project itself, his concerns relate to its location, the demolition of public and diplomatic properties and the use of public funds to finance its construction.
The engagement forms part of President Mahama’s ‘Resetting Ghana’ Citizen Engagement Tour, providing citizens with an opportunity to question government, seek answers and contribute to the national development agenda.
