The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has given occupants of Gbagbasetey in the Ashiedu Keteke Sub-Metropolitan District a one-week ultimatum to vacate the area ahead of a demolition exercise scheduled for next week.
The occupants were given the ultimatum on Monday, September 14, 2026 when the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey led an enforcement team to the area to write final warning inscriptions on structures earmarked for removal.
The area, also known as Dogo Beach and located opposite the Fire Service Training School, was originally designated as a temporary fishing bay and landing site for canoes.
Mayor Allotey explained that the one-week notice was intended to give occupants sufficient time to remove their belongings and vacate voluntarily before they moved in to clear the area.
The Mayor said the enforcement exercise formed part of a broader effort by the Assembly to restore order in communities within the metropolis and ensure that public and designated spaces were used for their approved purposes.
He stressed that the AMA preferred to give affected persons adequate notice before carrying out demolitions, adding that enforcement would only follow where occupants failed to comply voluntarily.
Mayor Allotey urged those affected to take the warning seriously and remove their structures and belongings within the stipulated period to avoid losses when the enforcement team returned.
He said the Assembly would not extend the deadline, stressing that the inscriptions placed on the structures were a clear indication that the planned demolition would go ahead next week.
He said the AMA remained committed to maintaining order, protecting public spaces and ensuring that development within Accra conformed to approved planning and land-use arrangements.
Mayor Allotey reiterated that the Assembly’s objective was not to inconvenience residents but to enforce regulations and prevent temporary arrangements from being converted into permanent unauthorised settlements.
