The Marine Police Detachment at Ada, operating under the Tema Regional Police Command, has intercepted an outboard-powered wooden canoe carrying 29 sacks of suspected Indian hemp at Tuanikopey Island on the River Volta.

The seizure occurred at approximately 12:45 a.m. on Thursday, 17th September 2026, during a routine water patrol.

Upon sighting the police unit, the occupants abandoned the vessel and escaped. A subsequent search of the canoe revealed 2,213 slabs of dried leaves wrapped in yellow cellotape.

Officers also recovered fourteen 25-litre jerrycans—twelve containing pre-mixed fuel—alongside two Yamaha outboard motors rated at 40HP and 30HP.

The impounded substances have been transferred to the Ada District Police Headquarters. Arrangements are underway to convey the outboard motors and fuel to the station for forensic examination and further investigation.

A statement signed by ASP Dede Dzakpasu, Head of Public Affairs for the Tema Regional Police, confirmed that efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the fled suspects.

“The Command cautions the public against engaging in the trafficking and transportation of narcotic substances,” ASP Dzakpasu stated.

She further urged members of the public with information regarding the identity or whereabouts of the suspects to report to the nearest police station to assist with the investigation.
