Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) must strengthen early warning mechanisms and flag emerging security risks before they escalate.
Speaking at a high-level training program on the Security and Intelligence Agencies Act, 2026 (Act 1168) for the Greater Accra Regional Security Council and MMDCEs, Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs Mahama Ayariga highlighted the crucial role local leadership plays in maintaining national stability.
As heads of local security councils, MMDCEs occupy a strategic position to gather timely intelligence and report threats to regional and national authorities.
The newly enacted legislation, which received presidential assent in March 2026, modernizes Ghana’s security architecture by establishing streamlined reporting channels and coordination across local, regional, and national levels.
Mahama Ayariga described Greater Accra as the country’s heartbeat, emphasizing that its peace directly influences overall national stability. Ground-level intelligence remains the bedrock of national safety, meaning local failure compromises security everywhere.
According to him, must maintain constant vigilance against communal disputes, cyber threats, and regional vulnerabilities while fostering tight collaboration with national institutions to fulfill the new mandate.
