The National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has urged the public to cease attempts to elevate other independence figureheads to the same status as Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
Addressing attendees on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at the unveiling of NkrumahFest—a project spearheaded by Ellembelle MP Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah to honor Nkrumah’s heritage and encourage academic engagement with his literature—Asiedu Nketiah insisted that Dr Nkrumah uniquely earned the title of Ghana’s founder.
He noted that prior to Dr Nkrumah’s leadership, the geographic region comprised four distinct, autonomous domains: Trans-Volta Togoland, the Ashanti Kingdom, the Gold Coast, and the Northern Territories. Dr Nkrumah’s pivotal leadership was the unifying force that bound these distinct lands into one sovereign state.
“I thought that Nkrumah deserves to hold that single title as the founder of Ghana. Before Nkrumah came to the scene, there was nothing like Ghana,” he said.
Emphasizing that no contemporary figure or fellow freedom fighter rivals his historical impact on the nation’s creation, Asiedu Nketiah added: “No other politician and no other nationalist can compare themselves to the one and only Osagyefo Dr Nkrumah.”
