The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested five suspects and retrieved firearms, narcotics, and a substantial amount of cash during an intelligence-led operation at Aboabo in the Tamale Metropolis.
The targeted operation was conducted on Monday, 21 September 2026, at about 11:30 am by the Command’s Special Operations team, popularly known as “RED MARIA”, to clamp down on drug peddling, drug use, and related criminal activities.
Acting on credible information, officers proceeded to the Tamale Aboabo scraps area near the forest, where five suspects were apprehended.
The suspects have been identified as Ibrahim Issahaku, 39; Mohammed John, 28; Mohammed Nawas, 25; Mohammed Osman Awal, 41; and Kwame Boateng, 28.
A search conducted at the residence of Ibrahim Issahaku led to the recovery of two foreign-made pistols, two rounds of 9mm ammunition, a parcel of suspected Indian hemp, and GH¢1,880 in cash.
Officers also recovered GH¢18,825 concealed inside the motorcycle of Kwame Boateng at the ghetto, which investigators suspect to be proceeds from the sale of narcotic drugs.
Further exhibits retrieved from the scene included 123 wraps of suspected Indian hemp, 12 sachets of 1mg Rohypnol, seven sachets of 250mg Tramadol, 111 wraps of suspected ashes, and three motorbikes.
All five suspects, along with the seized items, have been handed over to the Regional Drug Law Enforcement Unit (RDLEU) for further investigation and necessary action.
In an official press release issued on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, the Northern Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Wisdom Lavoe, stated that the exercise forms part of ongoing efforts to clear illicit drug networks out of the region.
“The operation reflects the continued efforts of the Regional Command, through the RED MARIA Team, to combat crime, particularly illicit drug trafficking and use within the region,” DCOP Mr Lavoe noted.
He assured the public that the Police Service will sustain proactive measures to safeguard local communities.
“The Command will continue to sustain intelligence-led operations to disrupt drug-related activities and associated criminal activities,” the Regional Commander added.
