The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has refuted claims by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) that its proposed 30 percent increase in transport fares has been suspended.
According to the Union, final discussions regarding the fare adjustment will take place today, Tuesday, September 22, 2026.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for the GPRTU, Samuel Amoah, explained that negotiations were still ongoing during their previous meeting on Friday, September 18.
He stated that the Union has formally notified authorities that it will accept nothing less than a 25 percent increase. He further warned that accepting any figure below 15 percent would significantly disadvantage transport operators.
“There has never been an agreement with the government to suspend our proposed increment. We have communicated to the government that we will accept nothing less than a 25 percent increase. We expect to conclude our final discussions today, and we will only accept 25 percent if our 30 percent proposal is rejected,” he said.
He added: “During our last meeting with the Minister on Friday, we were still negotiating the 30 percent increase. At no point did we suspend our decision. We want 30 percent, but should the government request a reduction, we will only accept 25 percent.”
Mr Amoah contradicted an earlier assertion made by NPA Chief Executive, Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, who claimed that recent engagements had convinced transport operators to hold off on the planned increment.
He noted that a joint communiqué will be issued following today’s meeting, stressing that commuters should prepare for an inevitable adjustment in transport fares.
