The 2024 presidential candidate for the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Akosua Frimponmaa Sarpong-Kumankumah, has stated that Ghana is worse off following the overthrow of the late Dr Kwame Nkrumah, who served as the first President of the Republic.
She stated that history will always remember the late Nkrumah as a visionary who possessed a long-term development plan.
According to her, it is deeply painful that farmers in Ghana today grow produce without finding buyers.
She noted that it should be the state’s responsibility to establish systems that make it much easier for farmers to sell their produce.
Nana Frimponmaa Sarpong-Kumankumah said Ghana has reached a point where the current duopoly political system has covertly established undemocratic structures inimical to the growth and development of the country.
She argued that the late Nkrumah had a structure in place to overhaul the defence system and push Ghana towards economic independence, but what the country is witnessing today is unfortunate.
Speaking to the host, Kwabena Agyapong, on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Frontline show, she said Dr Nkrumah, working alongside his competent appointees, liberated Ghana from colonial rule.
“Nkrumah was committed to the developmental agenda of every single Ghanaian. He was concerned about the welfare of farmers, doctors, teachers, the unemployed, and every single person. He demonstrated that we had the capacity to manage our own affairs. He had a plan to transform Ghana, but we are worse off today as a country. We have refused to implement the long-term development plan of the late Nkrumah.”
She also questioned why the books written by the late Dr Nkrumah are primarily found abroad. She claimed that although Nkrumah authored several books, his critics ensured these works were removed from local shelves.
For Ghana to get back on its path of transformation, she proposed a renewal of national thinking and a commitment to a path that unites citizens towards development.
Nana Akosua Frimponmaa Sarpong-Kumankumah commended the ruling government for restoring the commemoration of the late Dr Nkrumah and celebrating him for leading the independence struggle.
