The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has issued an official statement regarding the aborted arrest of the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Hon. Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, on Wednesday, 23 September 2026.
According to the anti-graft agency, officers attempted to apprehend the lawmaker in connection with an ongoing investigation after he failed to honour two invitations extended to him in February 2026.
However, the operation was halted after officers determined that pursuing the arrest further amidst an escalating confrontation would put the public at risk.
“During today’s attempted arrest, the situation escalated and the arrest was not successfully completed as officers assessed that a counter action would have endangered public safety,” the statement signed by the Head of Corporate Affairs and Public Education noted.
EOCO further revealed that it has identified two individuals captured on video footage who allegedly intervened to facilitate the MP’s escape. Law enforcement is currently assessing their actions to determine the appropriate legal measures.
Following the botched operation, the MP sought refuge within the precincts of Parliament, despite the House currently being on recess. Addressing concerns regarding parliamentary immunity, EOCO clarified that it respects constitutional privileges but emphasized that legislative office does not confer absolute immunity from criminal investigation.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Membership of Parliament does not, by itself, bring an investigation to an end or place an individual beyond the reach of the law,” the outfit stated, adding that it will conduct all operations strictly within the framework of the Constitution.
EOCO reassured the public that the investigation remains active and that video evidence of the incident will be thoroughly reviewed to guide subsequent actions.
