The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Mahama Ayariga (MP), has inspected the ongoing National Emergency Waste Evacuation Exercise at Agbogbloshie to evaluate progress as the cleanup operation entered its fifth day.
The intensive sanitation drive targets heavy refuse accumulations across Agbogbloshie, Old Fadama, Abbosey Okai, and Jamestown. The initiative brings together key public and security entities, including the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Zoomlion Ghana Limited, District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) teams, and personnel from the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces.
During the site visit, Hon. Ayariga held discussions with the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, alongside Zoomlion executives, DRIP coordinators, equipment operators, and military commanders from the 48 Engineer Regiment to receive operational updates and review field challenges.
Field supervisors briefed the Minister on significant headway made in clearing long-standing refuse piles, whilst highlighting key bottlenecks—notably the massive volume of waste piled at the local transfer station and dense traffic congestion stalling haulage trucks.
Responding to these operational delays, Hon. Ayariga emphasized the importance of maximizing daily output. He pledged to engage the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service to establish dedicated traffic management protocols, ensuring heavy machinery and trucks move swiftly to extend active operational hours.
The Minister lauded the joint task force for their dedication, expressing confidence that the multi-agency collaboration will successfully clear the backlog of waste and restore sanitary conditions to Agbogbloshie and neighboring communities.
Work remains ongoing across all targeted zones in the capital.
