Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued a strong warning to Ghana and 46 other nations to prevent their citizens from being drafted into Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Addressing world leaders at the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, Zelenskyy revealed that foreign nationals—including individuals from Ghana, Kenya, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Nepal, Tajikistan, India, Yemen, Cuba, Belarus, and Sudan—have been deployed to the front lines.
The warning comes amid reports that 62 Ghanaians have lost their lives in the conflict, with 15 others still missing. Reports suggest several Ghanaian nationals were lured to Russia under false pretences before being forced into military service.
Zelenskyy noted that while some foreign recruits went voluntarily, many ended up in the conflict through “deception and tricks.”
He added that Ukraine has received formal requests from several foreign governments seeking the release and return of specific prisoners of war.
Directly appealing to the affected countries, the Ukrainian leader urged swift government action to protect their people from foreign recruitment schemes.
“I want to speak directly to every representative of these 47 countries: You know what Russia is doing with your people, your citizens. Take care of them. And do not let them end up on another front.
Do not let Putin drag you into his war. Do not let Russia put out its fires, cover up its shame, and pay for its madness with the lives of your people. Limit his room to act. Limit his money. Limit his war.”
The 81st session of the UN General Assembly is currently taking place in New York, with the high-level General Debate scheduled from 22 to 28 September 2026.
