To tackle persistent gridlock into Accra’s Central Business District (CBD), the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has launched a contra-flow transit system along three primary corridors: Amasaman–Accra, Adenta–Accra, and Kasoa–Accra.
Starting Tuesday, September 29, 2026, designated segments on these heavy-traffic routes will allow authorized Ayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicles to travel against standard traffic flow during peak hours (6:00 AM–9:00 AM and 4:00 PM–8:00 PM).
These temporary corridors are strictly reserved for Ayalolo buses; all private cars, taxis, trotros, and other non-authorized transport are forbidden from entering.
“The intervention forms part of efforts to improve public transportation, reduce congestion and provide more reliable mobility for commuters travelling into and out of the CBD,” stated Awudu Dawuda, Managing Director of the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE), during a Monday media briefing.
Executed jointly by GAPTE, the Department of Urban Roads (DUR), and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, the policy relies on MTTD personnel stationed at key intersections to enforce lane boundaries and direct traffic.
Authorities anticipate the initiative will cut transit durations, enhance schedule reliability, ease arterial congestion, and incentivize commuters to choose mass transit over private vehicles. The Ministry requests full cooperation from drivers, commercial operators, pedestrians, and local enterprises to ensure smooth compliance.
